The Grim Reaper is coming to Exeter High Street on Saturday to thank local banks for helping his business! In order to save the banking sector, the Con-Dems are putting the ‘scythe to our services.’
“Ever since the NHS was set up, business has been on the wane,” laments Grim, “but CUTS KILL, you know! That’s why I’m a huge fan of the Coalition’s plans to destroy the welfare state; that irreplaceable health service in particular!”
The event is being staged by Exeter Anti Cuts Alliance to protest about Andrew Lansley’s bill to destroy the NHS as we know it. He aims to give away the NHS to private healthcare conglomerates and introduce competition on the basis of price. This will lead to private “social enterprises” cherry picking profitable work and leaving the more difficult cases to what remains of the NHS – rendering it less viable financially. The Tories promised “no cuts to the NHS” on their election billboards, but now they are planning to cut £20 Billion from its budgets (about 20%). Already 900 redundancies have been announced at the RD&E hospital in Exeter. GP’s will be put in charge of purchasing instead of focusing on looking after their patients.
Mark McSheehy, Chair of the protest group and healthcare professional said, “None of Lansley’s plans make any sense unless you look at it from the point of view of opportunities for profiteering by huge healthcare corporations. People who can’t afford to pay would get second-class service in future and have to wait much longer for treatment.”
Meanwhile, wealthy banks have been supported hook, line and sinker by the government, with cuts to corporation tax and a blind eye being turned to massive tax avoidance running to £ Billions, let alone the bail-outs in 2008 themselves. Public and healthcare services are now paying for that.
EACA is joining a national day of protest this Saturday to defend the NHS. Events are being organised in High Streets everywhere to let the government know that their NHS plans are unacceptable.
Join Exeter Anti-Cuts Alliance in Bedford Square this Saturday from 12 to 2pm and show the Grim Reaper our NHS is not for sale!
